Engineering Skills Programmes
What is a Skills Programme?
- Short programmes that lead to an employable skill and earn credits on the NQF towards a qualification.
- A set or cluster of unit standards delivered by an accredited provider and combined with practical or work experience.
- Beneficial for improving skills and employability, addressing critical skills needs, developing specific competencies, and creating a culture of accountability.
MQA Artisan Aide Level 2
All disciplines
The MQA Accredited Skills Program may be the ideal platform for obtaining credits towards the National Certificate in Engineering (NQF Level 2) and the other engineering apprenticeship qualifications or related sub-fields.

Entry Requirements:
- Candidates boarding on learning towards this skills program must have ABET 4 / NQF Level 1 or Grade 9 with English and Mathematics or equivalent.
- A candidate must have worked as an Artisan assistant or Artisan aide on the specific trade to be considered for the Skills Program.
Training Approach and Periods
Available on both Mechanical and Electrical Trades. Provider Training duration depends on the trade:

- After completion of this course, a candidate will be issued with a On-Job logbook. These logbooks contain modules that needs to be completed at the workplace and signed-off by a competent person. The duration of the On-Job modules depends on the required credits that needs to be completed for the respective trade.
- On successful completion of the on-job modules, results will be captured on the MQA system and the candidate will receive a MQA issued certificate.
- Candidates will be registered on the MQA system by CTC, and will be required to supply:
- Certified copy of ID
- Certified copy qualifications
- Employment contract
- Service letter
MQA Medium
Voltage Switching
This MQA Accredited Skills Program is a requirement in terms of the Mines Health and Safety Act for qualified persons performing MV switching on mines. (No credits toward qualification)
Entry Requirements:
- Qualified Millwright or Electrician
- Minimum of 2 years relevant experience
Training Approach and Periods
- The course covers:
- Introduction to medium voltage systems
- Substations
- Protection
- NERM
- ECM
- Permits
- Switching
- Phasing
- Completion of workbook
- Pre-Assessment
- Complete a week of theory.
- Required to do 7–14 weeks of On-Job training and complete tasks to log experience.
- Return to CTC for 1 day theoretical and 1 day practical assessment, all results to be forwarded to the MQA for certification.
- Candidates will be registered on the MQA system by CTC, and will be required to supply:
- Certified copy of ID
- Certified copy qualifications
- Employment contract
- Service letter.
