Mining Skills Programme
What is a Skills Programme?
- Short programmes that lead to an employable skill and earn credits on the NQF towards a qualification.
- A set or cluster of unit standards delivered by an accredited provider and combined with practical or work experience.
- Beneficial for improving skills and employability, addressing critical skills needs, developing specific competencies, and creating a culture of accountability.
Surface Excavations
Competent Person A:
Surface Excavations (MQA/SP/0175/18 (B))
This course is a legal requirement for any person that inspects and declares a workplace safe on an opencast mining operation.
This course is open to employers and private sector.
Entry Requirements:
Learners must be able to read and write;
- Required items of PPE
- Valid certificate of medical fitness
- Certified copy of ID
- Certified copy of qualification
- Proof of payment
Training Approach and Periods
- Learners will be required to attend class at CTC for 8 days and complete on-job training if required.
- Learners that don’t have sufficient relevant mining experience will be required to complete an on-job logbook on an operational mine. To complete the logbook will take ± 1-2 weeks.
- On successful completion of the practical assessment, the learner’s final registration and certification will be done by the MQA.
- Candidates will be registered on the MQA system by CTC.
Blasting Assistant:
Surface Excavations (SP-CLA-G017)
This course is a legal requirement for any person that works with or are part of the use of explosives on an opencast mining operation.
This course is open to employers and private sector.
Entry Requirements:
Learners must be able to read and write;
- Required items of PPE

- Certified copy of ID
- Certified copy of qualification

Underground Mining
Fall of Ground Competent “A” (Underground Coal) – Skills Programme
This course is a legal requirement for any person that inspects and declares a workplace safe for himself / herself and a crew in an underground mining operation.
Entry Requirements:
Learners must be able to read and write, with a minimum of 10 days underground exposure.
A candidate must be in possession of:
- Personal information document
- Certified copy of ID
- Copy of Medical Fitness Certificate
- Underground clothing and PPE
- CTC Application for training
Training Approach and Periods
- Learners will be required to attend class at CTC for 5 days and complete on-job training if required.
- Learners that don’t have sufficient relevant mining experience will be required to complete an on-job logbook on an operational mine. To complete the logbook will take ± 1-2 weeks.
